"Earnest and dull" is exactly what Kristof called Canada in today's NY Times. (Pretty hard hitting indictment of a country there Nick.) I'm definitely with him though, on his proposal that we "lend strong American support — to a worthwhile Canadian initiative."
Why? Well, I can't count the number of times I've seen someone with goiter and thought how easy it would be to avoid. I've also spent enough time with women in mountain villages of Afghanistan to know that there's something more to their "mental slowness" than the unbelievable paucity of and disincentives to educational opportunities.
The Canadian initiative is the sort of long-run vision that seems to be missing from US foreign aid these days.
